To mitigate the ‘range anxiety’ of electric vehicles, automakers have and continue to toy with the idea of extended-range EVs. Basically, it’s a full battery electric vehicle that has an onboard gasoline engine that acts as a generator to top up the battery, for a longer range.
Normally, these generators have been conventional internal combustion engines, but some OEMs have got creative in their setups. Here are a few examples from both the future and past that defy convention.
