Alfa Romeo’s new compact crossover, the Tonale, has just completed official EnerGuide testing and the results for this plug-in electric hybrid (PHEV) are better than originally forecasted.
Electric-only range is 53 km, with a combined 3.1 Le/100 km fuel economy rating. Alfa says it’s now the most efficient PHEV compact SUV on the market. Total range, with a full battery, is 573 km. Originally, the Italian brand said it achieved only 48 km of electric range.
“The Alfa Romeo Tonale represents the beginning of our transformation to greater electrification while staying true to the performance characteristics our customers expect from the brand, including a best-in-class 285 horsepower,” says Larry Dominique, SVP, Head of Alfa Romeo North America.
The hot AWD PHEV crossover uses a 180-hp 1.3L turbo four cylinder to power the front wheels, while a 90 kW electric motor powered by a 15.5-kWh battery runs the rear wheels. Total output is a best-in-class 285 horsepower and 347 lb.-ft. of torque.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale PHEV starts at $54,995 for the Sprint and $57,995 for the Veloce. Vehicles are shipping to dealerships now.
