Speculation is rife that a design sketch posted on General Motors Design’s official instagram account this afternoon might in fact be a subtle tease of a future, all-electric GMC Sierra.
A newer, more premium-spec edition of the GMC Sierra for 2022 – the Sierra Denali Ultimate – was unveiled last week featuring not only a refurbished cabin and a more compatible infotainment system, but also revised headlamps and a new front grille, similar in style to that featured in the Instagram sketch.
Moreover, GM also announced earlier this month that the first electric Chevrolet Silverado EV will make its global debut at next year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. With concurrent generations of the Silverado and the Sierra traditionally being built on the same platform and sharing the same drivetrain, plus the timeliness of the Instagram post, this has led to speculation that the sketch may in fact be a tease of an electric version of the 2022 Sierra. The truck in the sketch even includes a closed-off front grille synonymous with EV models.
Of course, GMC’s official communique on the revised GMC Sierra did not mention any upcoming electric powertrains, with focus instead on the pick-up truck’s new 2.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The company’s social media team has also provided no further details, commenting only that the work was a “seriously tough truck” by artist Nathan Zabarsky. Speculation thus remains just that for now.
