Are you ready for some football? The Super Bowl is always one of the biggest sports events of the year, and on February 12 the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will battle for the Vince Lombardi Trophy at Super Bowl LVII.
But even if you’re not a football fan, the Big Game is still a must-watch event for one reason alone: the commercials. These spots – which can command up to US$7 million for just 30 seconds of air time – have been legendary for their creativity, production and, in many cases, humour. And this year, General Motors is teaming up with Netflix for a 60-second spot to tout its electric vehicles. With Will Ferrell as the star, you know it’ll be funny.
GM released two teaser videos of the ad, which is titled EVs on Screen and scheduled to air in the second quarter of the game. Ferrell will play on various Netflix series and movies, including Army of the Dead, Bridgerton, Squid Game and Stranger Things.
The ads will showcase the GMC Hummer EV pickup and Sierra Denali EV, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Silverado EV and Cadillac Lyriq, all fully electric vehicles.
But wait, as they say, there’s more! On top of the teaser videos, two more 15-second teaser spots will be released this week, followed by longer 30- and 60-second clips on the company’s YouTube channel. And don’t worry, there likely won’t even be a mention of football in the lot.
