Delivery companies, contractors and other businesses will have a new, emissions-free option for transportation later this year, with the debut of the new 2024 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter van.

The gas-powered Sprinter has long been a favourite for work, and now the German automaker is bringing an all-electric version to Canada and the US in the second half of this year, with the European market following later. And for those who felt the Ford E-Transit’s estimated range of around 200 km just wasn’t enough, the eSprinter comes to Canada with a 113 usable kWh lithium/iron phosphate battery pack and an estimated range on the European WLTP cycle of “up to 400 km”, while the WLTP city cycle is “up to 500 km”. We’ll have to wait for official North American ratings that will probably have a lower range, but there’s no doubt the eSprinter will be more ideal for longer journeys. It also offer much more range than the first-generation eSprinter in Europe, which could only muster just over 150 km.

The configuration we’ll see in Canadian dealerships will be the long cargo van with a high roof, with 14 cubic metres of cargo area and a gross vehicle weight of 4.25 tonnes. It will be rear-wheel drive with a standard 136 hp or optional 204 hp, and 295 lb-ft of torque. Standard charging capacity is 50 kW, but with the optional 115 kW, the eSprinter can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in around 42 minutes on Level 3 charging.

The interior offers a more car-like space you wouldn’t normally find in a utility van, for more comfort and convenience. The eSprinter is equipped with the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, which includes the ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice control assistant, and can be connected with the cloud-based smartphone services in the Mercedes me connect3 digital ecosystem.
The eSprinter will be built at Mercedes’ factories in Charleston, South Carolina, with future production planned in Düsseldorf, Germany, and European-only production in Ludwigsfelde, Germany. Prices will be released closer to the van’s debut.
