While Europe has been enjoying the Alfa Romeo Tonale, the Italian brand’s first PHEV compact crossover, for a few months, we in North America have had to wait. But it won’t be long now: production for Canada and the US has begun at Alfa’s Giambattista Vico Stellantis plant in Pomigliano d’Arco, Naples, Italy.

2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale
With a 16.5 kWh battery, the hot AWD crossover will sport 48 kilometres of electric-only range, and the additional 1.3L turbocharged engine combines with the 90 kW electric motor for a segment-leading 285 horsepower. There will also be a gas-only version, which sports a 2.0L turbo four-cylinder with 268 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque.
Prices for the Tonale PHEV start at $54,995 for the Sprint version, with the Veloce coming in at $57,495. This means the PHEV will qualify for up to $5,000 in Canadian EV rebates. The 2.0L starts at $44,995 for the Sprint and $46,495 for the Veloce. Expect to see the crossover in Canadian dealerships in June.
The Tonale features Alfa’s Frequency Damping Suspension (FDS) system for more dynamic performance, a host of driver assist features, a 10.25‑inch centre touchscreen and 12.3‑inch driver’s cluster screen with Uconnect, and an NFT (non‑fungible token) digital certificate.
