It’s official – the all-electric Porsche Taycan has been selected as the official Safety Car for the eighth season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The Taycan will make its debut during the opening round of the Formula E season in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, later this month.
This news is especially exciting when we consider that the Taycan is the first all-electric Porsche. From a consumer demand perspective, the Taycan surprised everyone by effectively outpacing all other Porsche vehicles for growth, even outselling the iconic 911 last year. Clearly, 2021 was a great year for Porsche, and 2022 shows no sign of slowing down.
“Formula E is delighted the Porsche Taycan Turbo S will serve as the championship’s Safety Car from Season 8,” shares Jamie Reigle, CEO of Formula E. “The Porsche Taycan Turbo S is the pinnacle of high performance electrified vehicles and will light up Formula E city racetracks around the world.”
The announcement revealed that Taycan Safety Car is “meant to both enhance visibility and evoke the colors of the series’ eleven teams, as well as those of the FIA and Formula E.” To this effect, the Taycan will act as a symbol, of sorts, alluding to collective efforts to embrace an all-electric future of motor racing. The Taycan SC features 750 hp, is able to hit 60 mph in 2.8 seconds and is nimble enough for high-speeds on tracks. It will be fitted with “highly visible light bars and the necessary toggles and switches in the cabin to operate them properly.”
Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, notes that Porsche is incredibly proud to be entrusted with this task on behalf of Formula E. “With the Taycan Turbo S as the official safety car, we’re making an important contribution to track safety and also underlining the importance of Formula E for Porsche Motorsport.”
