Rivian R1T with Snow Mode

EV startup Rivian just launched an exciting new update which allows drivers of its R1T pickup and R1S SUV to activate “Snow Mode” — a driving mode which “softens the pedal response for more gradual acceleration and deceleration while also helping to prevent slip and wheel lock.” Snow Mode arrives with a number of other changes the automaker deployed over-the-air this week, including new feature launches and minor bug fixes.

With the latest update, which included more than 30 changes, Drivers can also use the Rivian app on their smartphone to preheat the seats and steering wheel and defrost windows, which is sure to be a hit among Canadian EV drivers who are well acquainted with unforgiving winter conditions. Snow Mode also adds a lower, default brake regeneration setting to avoid wheel slip and lock, as well as a more seamless transition to the auto hold function for more controlled stops in slippery conditions. The vehicle will also ‘nudge’ a driver to activate Snow Mode if it detects wheel slip and a temperature below 1C.

In addition to Snow Mode, Rivian drivers can choose from Sport Mode, Off Road Drift, All Purpose, Off Road Auto, Off Road Rock Crawl, Off Road Rally, Conserve, and Towing mode.

The new update also enhanced Rivian EV’s entertainment features, with the music-streaming service Tidal now available via the Media app in addition to Spotify. Spotify Premium users can also now access their audiobooks for easy listening on the go. Other notable changes include an update to Rivian’s ‘Pet Comfort Mode’, which maintains a temperature between 20 and 23 Celsius in the car while you are away to ensure the comfort of four-legged passengers, and self-driving improvements.

These updates signify positive momentum for the automaker, which has faced no shortage of challenges this year amidst recall notices and production delays. As of right now, the company says it’s on track to hit its 25,000 vehicle production targets, and the Rivian R2 (which is expected to be a more affordable Rivian electric truck option) is expected sometime in 2026.
