Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited the Stellantis Windsor Assembly Plant on Jan. 17, 2023.

Stellantis, the Canadian federal government and the government of Ontario, have come to a financial agreement that will see the automaker resume construction of its battery plant in Windsor.

Work on the $5 billion plant was halted in May after the federal government made an agreement with Volkswagen of up to $13 billion for its new battery factory in St. Thomas, Ontario. After all three parties announced the deal, Ontario Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli told The Globe and Mail that the deal is worth “up to $15 billion,” with the province covering one third of the bill and Ottawa filling in the rest.

The new factory, which will be run by NextStar Energy, the vehicle battery joint venture between Stellantis and LG Energy Solution, is expected to go online in 2024, creating around 2,500 new jobs and have an annual production of more than 45 gigawatt hours.
