GMC HUMMER EV

GMC has confirmed that production of its Hummer EV is now underway, with US customers expected to receive their pre-ordered units before the end of the year.

Though GMC has yet to confirm how many pre-orders were taken, its first customers will receive the fully-equipped Edition 1, a launch example that features a white exterior, ‘Lunar Horizon’ interior palette, and commemorative ‘Edition 1’ badging in the cabin.

The roll-out to Canadian customers is expected to begin in fall 2022, with MSRPs also set to be announced soon. GMC has confirmed a US$112,595 starting price for the Edition 1 in the US.

From bold and futuristic design cues, to cleverly executed details, the GMC HUMMER EV reimagines an instantly-recognizable silhouette for a modern, all-electric future.

Revealed in prototype trim in October 2020, GMC comments that this is one of the quickest prototype-to-production transitions in recent company memory. The Hummer EV Edition 1 simultaneously became the first fully-electric vehicles in GMC’s lineup, and the first to sit atop the company’s EV-dedicated, flexible Ultium platform. The Hummer features tri-electric motors within two drive units, a setup that draws all of its juice from Ultium batteries, and sends a whopping 1,000 hp and an estimated 11,500 lb-ft of torque through all four wheels.

Interestingly, the full “unprecedented performance capability” of that galactic power/torque combo will be delivered through GM’s ‘Watts to Freedom’ launch control system: from standstill, the Hummer EV Edition 1 could hit 97 km/h in “approximately three seconds.” That’s Acura NSX territory!

The GMC HUMMER EV’s design visually communicates extreme capability, reinforced with rugged architectural details that are delivered with a premium, well-executed and appointed interior.

For the Hummer’s more familiar off-road terrain, and following GMC’s claims that the EV will be “the ultimate off-road EV supertruck”, the Edition 1 is equipped with a four-way off-road drive mode (five if you include the configurable ‘Adrenaline Mode’), adaptive air suspension that can be raised by up to six inches, and enormous 35-inch wheels as standard (37-inch options are also available). The intriguingly named ‘CrabWalk’ system allows the front and rear wheels to steer in the same direction at low speeds, essentially allowing the Hummer EV to drive diagonally for greater maneuverability. Steel ‘Underbody Armour’ also helps protect the chassis and battery packs off the beaten track.

An 800-volt DC public fast-charging port compatible up to 350 kW means up to 160 km of range is available in only 10 minutes. Impressively, GMC has also predicted 560 km-plus of range for its new behemoth.
