Volkswagen has released a teaser clip of its first E-SUV coupe, the ID.5 GTX, ahead of its digital world premiere debut later this week.
Essentially the coupe version of VW’s first full-electric crossover – the ID.4, launched late last year – the new ID.5 also marks the continuation of Volkswagen’s new GTX sub-brand. The latter follows in the tire tracks of the performance-focused GTI, GTD and GTE ranks.
Details – as expected – have yet to be fully revealed, with the official tweet from Volkswagen stating only that the ID.5 GTX will boast a “flowing coupe design”, an “aerodynamic roofline”, and “low gravity centre”. The electric crossover is also expected to share the underpinnings of its ID.4 brethren. The latter is powered by two electric motors that send a combined 295 hp through all four wheels, plus a maximum of 119 lb-ft of torque through the front axle and 229 lb-ft through the rear. Top speed is 180 km/h, while 0-to-100 km/h is completed in a credible 6.2 seconds.
Admittedly, this is not the first time VW has teased the ID.5 GTX. Images of a pre-production example, clad in distinctive orange and green-striped camouflage, were previewed ahead of this year’s Munich Motor Show. While details were also kept to a minimum on that occasion, VW did confirm that the ID.5 GTX had been built on the brand’s new Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB), would feature a dual-engine four-wheel drive setup, and featured a lithium-ion battery capable of a “projected range” of 497 km. The E-SUV coupe is the latest in a long-term strategy for Volkswagen, one that includes up to 70 per cent of its sales across Europe to be electric models by 2030 ahead of becoming fully carbon neutral by 2050.
The sporty ID.5 GTX, as well as its base-spec ID.5, are set to be unveiled online here on Wednesday, November 3 at 2:00pm CET.
